Sam Soverel was put to the test many times in his heads up match against David Stamm but ended up calling in the wrong spot and will have to settle for second place.
Sam Soverel started heads up play with the chip lead over David Stamm but Stamm managed to claw his way back into the match and over the course of two hands, won the title.
Soverel opened to 100,000 on the button and faced a three-bet of 400,000 from Stamm. Soverel called and the two players checked down the Q♣Q♠3♠ flop and 4♦ turn. Stamm checked the 7♦ river and Soverel bet 375,000. Stamm called with K♠4♠ and Soverel flashed 8♥6♥ and mucked. That hand dropped him to 1,500,000 and the battle was over a few hands later.
Soverel opened to 125,000 and Stamm defended his big blind. Stamm bet 150,000 on the A♣Q♣Q♠ flop and Soverel called. Stamm checked the 9♣ turn and Soverel bet 375,000. Stamm then put Soverel all-in for 1,000,000 more. As he did many times during their match, Soverel scratched his head trying to think of what Stamm could have. A minute passed and he called with Q♦5♠ but was behind the flush of Stamm 8♣4♣.
Needing the board to pair, a queen, or a five, Soverel missed on the 3♠ river and will have to settle for second place. He earns $190,064 after buying in late on Day 2 and then running up a stack to position himself for his final table run. A winner’s recap will be posted shortly.
