The DSE III series has been primarily populated by players hailing from the western portion of the United States but that is starting to shift this week. More players from the East Coast are making their way in each day and two of those temporary transplants are battling it out in today’s $250,000 guaranteed event.

Jim Gilbert is one of the most familiar faces in tournaments on the East Coast, namely in Atlantic City, and he has gained notoriety on a national level in the last few years. Gilbert placed second in the Borgata BPO WPT Main Event in September 2015 and made the final table of the SHRPO “Big 4” $2,650 event last summer. Gilbert is someone we should see plenty of this summer as he opens his 2017 account today.

Michael Wang burst onto the poker mainstream a few summers ago when he opened the 2015 WSOP with his first career bracelet win. That win was worth a whopping $466,000 to Wang, who defeated a final table that included Greg Merson, Bryn Kenney, and Byron Kaverman. Wang doesn’t stand out physically at the table but his game has a reputation all of its own that is on display for Day 1A.

Already in the DSE III series, we have seen players put together a deep run in more than one event. Most notably, Will Givens made back-to-back final tables in multi-day events in Event 12 and 18, respectively. Two players in the Day 1A field have already reached the podium once in the DSE III series are looking to add another five-figure score to their summer ledger.

Oluwashola Deadman started her DSE III about as well as she could hope for by chopping the Event 7 $400 $100,000 guaranteed SuperStack for over $26,000. Deadman officially took second in the event and is in the hunt for her first DSE title. Both she and her husband, Simon, are familiar faces in the Venetian Poker Room and in action on Day 1A.

Airy Phanhyaseng put together an impressive wire-to-wire final table performance at the Event 12 final table that culminated in him taking down first place for $40,000. That title is the third forPhanhyaseng, who is quite familiar with all events at the Venetian. Phanhyaseng said he would be back again soon, and indeed he is in the early stages of Day 1A.

Event 23: ‘Super High Rollers’ In The Field

The poker world currently has its eyes firmly set on the Super High Roller Bowl. The $300,000 buy-in event attracts a combination of the best players in the world and top businessmen looking to test their mettle. One participant from a Super High Roller Bowl of year’s past and another one who was in the 2017 field are both in today’s Day 1A session looking to claim a DSE III title.

As gregarious as he is competitive, business magnate John Morgan is a frequent participant in events at the Venetian but is also quite well known on the high roller circuit. Morgan took part in the first Super High Roller Bowl in 2015, when it was a $500,000 buy-in, and participated in the inaugural $1,000,000 “Big One for One Drop” event in 2012. Morgan currently owns one DSE title from November 2015 but with the amount of volume he puts it in, he could be on his way to a second victory before the end of the summer.

Ankush Mandavia participated in SHRB for the first time this year but was unable to emerge from a daunting table and busted on Day 1. One major detail that separates Mandavia from of his SHRB competitors is his willingness to compete in events of all buy-in levels. That fact is supplemented by his win in a $600 bounty event in February’s DSE I series. Mandavia plays in tournaments on a regular basis at the Venetian and today’s Day 1A is far from the last time we will see him over the summer.
